Yup, you read that correctly. It’s never too early to start planning for your upgrade to the bigger and better DB2 for z/OS. There is another new release of DB2 on the horizon, DB2 10 for z/OS. With every new DB2 comes migration/fallback PTFs; that stuff you apply to your existing system so everyone plays well together…

With DB2 10, you get two sets of migration/fallback PTFs. You get the set your normal DB2 9 to DB2 10 upgrade, and then you get your set of fixes for that occasional customer that decides to upgrade from DB2 Version 8 to DB2 10. Although not the recommendated migration path by IBM, it is one of the available migration paths from IBM.

So as you start hearing more and more about how cool DB2 10 is, check out one of these information APARs that list out the migration/fallback maintenance available or soon to be available.

For the majority of you all, here’s the DB2 9 to DB2 10 information migration/fallback APAR

And for the few that might be considering skipping a release of DB2, here’s the DB2 Version 8 to DB2 9 migration/fallback informational APAR

II14474: DB2 V8 MIGRATION/FALLBACK INFOAPAR TO/FROM DB2 10

Well, that’s it for now.

One Response to “How to get ready for DB2 10 for z/OS”

  1. db2dave says:

Of the tomes that you have produced, the absolute ‘must read first’ chapters concern your advice re benefits of DB2 upgrades in terms of z/OS and the exploitation of H/W features. This is largely because I see your advice as empirical rather than theoretical or lab-based (although the latter also need representing).

DB2v10 and z/OS 1.11 ought to generate huge interest for managers who are aware of MIPS and costs. This is quite apart from comfortably coping with business/data growth.

Based on your unique approach, I look forward to your papers.
